You can easily create a PDF file out of a Word file by using the Acrobat PDF converter.
If you have Acrobat, open Microsoft Word and print to the item called ';Acrobat Distiller.';
If you do not have Acrobat, you have two choices:
1. Install a PostScript printer driver as a file printer, along with GSView and GhostScript from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost and print the Word file to a .PS (PostScript) file. Open it in GSView and print to the PDFWriter device.
2. Download and install OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org) Open the Word Document in Open Office, and then select ';Export to PDF'; off the File menu.
The best free software I have found for this is pdf995:

Just use the print dialoge and select pdf995 as the printer. Works great.
Oh yeah, it works from any application which can print, not just Word.
